How Aadhaar OTP and Digital KYC Work for Loan Applications
NeerCred Team · 12/1/2025
Digital KYC (Know Your Customer) using Aadhaar has become a standard part of how personal loan applications are verified online, replacing what used to require a branch visit with physical documents.
What Aadhaar OTP-based KYC does
Aadhaar-based e-KYC lets you verify your identity digitally by consenting to share your Aadhaar-linked details (typically name, address, and photo) with the lender, authenticated via an OTP (one-time password) sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number - rather than submitting a physical photocopy of your Aadhaar card.
Why this matters for a digital loan application
This is what allows an entire personal loan application - from eligibility check through identity verification - to be completed online, often within minutes, without visiting a branch or mailing physical documents. It's a core part of what makes "fully digital, paperless" lending possible in practice, not just in marketing language.
What you're actually consenting to
When you complete Aadhaar OTP verification for a loan application, you're giving explicit consent for the lender to access your Aadhaar-linked identity details for that specific verification. Under India's data protection framework, this consent should be clearly disclosed and limited to the stated purpose - a legitimate lender will make clear what you're consenting to before you enter the OTP.
What to watch for
Only enter your Aadhaar OTP on a legitimate lender's or marketplace's official application flow - never in response to an unsolicited call, SMS link, or third-party site claiming to need it for a "personal loan offer" you didn't apply for. This is a common vector for fraud, and no genuine lender needs your OTP outside of your own active, initiated application.
What happens if your Aadhaar-linked mobile number has changed
If you no longer have access to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number, Aadhaar OTP verification won't work, and you'd typically need to complete KYC through an alternative method the lender offers, or update your mobile number with UIDAI first.
