Credit Card Rewards and Cashback: How They Actually Work
NeerCred Team · 6/15/2026
Credit card rewards and cashback programs are a major part of how cards are marketed, but understanding how they actually work helps you evaluate the real value rather than the headline percentage.
Reward points vs. direct cashback
Some cards earn reward points per unit of spending, redeemable later for vouchers, merchandise, statement credit, or travel bookings, often at varying redemption rates depending on what you choose to redeem for. Cashback cards more directly credit a percentage of your spending back to you, generally with simpler, more transparent value.
Why the "real" value of points can be lower than it looks
Reward points often have different redemption values depending on how you use them - redeeming for travel or specific partner options can yield a higher effective value than redeeming for generic vouchers or statement credit, so the advertised "earn rate" doesn't always translate directly into an equivalent cash value at redemption.
Category-specific and capped rewards
Many cards offer accelerated rewards (a higher rate) only on specific spending categories (dining, groceries, online shopping, a specific merchant), often up to a monthly or category cap, with a lower base rate applying to everything else - reading the fine print on which categories qualify, and any caps, is essential to accurately estimate your actual earnings.
Fees, minimums, and expiry to watch for
Some rewards programs have redemption minimums (you need a certain number of points before you can redeem anything), and points can expire after a certain period if unused - both of which reduce the effective value of rewards you've "earned" but never actually redeemed.
How to evaluate a rewards program honestly
Look at your actual spending pattern against the card's specific category rates and caps, factor in realistic redemption value (not the best-case scenario), and compare that estimated annual value against the card's fee - this gives a much more accurate picture than comparing headline reward percentages between cards.
