Credit Line Eligibility and Documentation

Credit line eligibility assessment is broadly similar to unsecured loan eligibility, since most credit lines are also unsecured (though some, like a property-backed overdraft, are secured) - here's what's typically involved.

Core eligibility factors

  • Income and income stability: Similar to a personal loan, lenders assess your ability to service potential drawn amounts, though the assessment may be somewhat more conservative given the revolving, flexible-use nature of the facility.
  • Credit score: A strong CIBIL score continues to matter, reflecting your general credit reliability.
  • Existing debt obligations: Lenders factor in your current EMI and credit exposure when determining the credit line limit they're comfortable extending.
  • For secured credit lines (like an overdraft against property or fixed deposit): the value of the pledged asset also determines the maximum limit, similar to LAP.

Documentation typically required

  • PAN card and Aadhaar card for identity verification
  • Income proof - salary slips/Form 16 for salaried applicants, or ITRs and bank statements for self-employed applicants
  • For business credit lines: business financial statements, GST filings, and bank statements demonstrating cash flow patterns

How credit line assessment can differ from a standard loan

Since the facility is revolving and you might draw varying amounts over time, some lenders assess eligibility somewhat more conservatively than for a fixed loan of the same headline amount, since the ongoing, flexible nature of usage introduces different risk dynamics than a single lump-sum disbursal with a fixed repayment schedule.

What determines your approved limit

Similar to a credit card, your approved credit line limit is typically based on your income, credit score, existing obligations, and (for secured facilities) the value of any pledged asset - and, like a credit card limit, it can sometimes be increased over time based on your usage and repayment track record with the facility.
