How Many Personal Loans Can You Have at Once?
NeerCred Team · 1/16/2026
There's no fixed legal limit in India on how many personal loans you can hold simultaneously - but that doesn't mean it's straightforward to get approved for multiple loans, or a wise financial decision to try.
Why there's no hard legal cap, but a practical one
Each lender makes its own independent decision on whether to approve you for an additional loan, based on your overall existing debt burden (including any other personal loans you already have), your income, and your EMI-to-income ratio. In practice, this makes it progressively harder to get approved for each additional loan, since your existing obligations count against you in every subsequent application.
How lenders see multiple existing loans
When you apply for a new loan, lenders check your credit report, which shows your existing loan accounts and their EMI amounts. A high total existing EMI burden relative to your income is one of the more common reasons for rejection of a new application, regardless of how many loans you already technically hold.
Why holding multiple loans can be risky even if you're approved
Managing multiple EMIs across different lenders, due dates, and terms increases the operational risk of missing a payment simply through complexity, not necessarily unaffordability. It also means your overall financial flexibility - your ability to handle an unexpected expense or income disruption - is more constrained with each additional obligation.
When taking on an additional loan while repaying another might make sense
Occasionally there's a genuine, well-considered reason - for example, taking a lower-cost loan specifically to consolidate and pay off a higher-cost existing debt (see our guide on debt consolidation), rather than simply adding a new, unrelated obligation on top of existing ones.
A general principle
Before applying for an additional loan while already repaying one or more, it's worth honestly assessing your total EMI-to-income ratio across everything you already owe, not just whether a specific new lender is willing to approve you.
