How to Avoid Personal Loan Scams and Fraud

NeerCred Team · 1/5/2026

Digital lending has made borrowing faster and more convenient, but it's also created room for scams targeting people who need money quickly. Knowing the common warning signs is your best protection.

Common red flags

  • Upfront payment demanded before disbursal. A genuine lender never asks you to pay a fee - "processing," "insurance," "GST," or otherwise - to your personal bank account or via UPI before releasing loan funds. Legitimate processing fees are disclosed in the KFS and typically deducted from the disbursed amount, not collected separately upfront.
  • "Guaranteed approval, no documents, no credit check." Regulated lenders are required to conduct genuine creditworthiness assessment - any platform claiming to skip this entirely is not operating as a legitimate regulated lender.
  • Unsolicited loan offers via SMS/WhatsApp with a link, especially for an application you never initiated. Never enter your Aadhaar OTP, bank details, or personal information through a link received unsolicited.
  • Pressure to decide immediately, with no time to read terms or a Key Fact Statement.
  • Apps requesting excessive permissions - contacts, photos, call logs - that have no legitimate connection to assessing a loan application, sometimes later used for harassment-based "recovery" tactics.

How to protect yourself

  • Only apply through a lender's or marketplace's official website or verified app.
  • Confirm the lender is genuinely RBI-regulated (a registered bank or NBFC) before sharing any personal or financial details.
  • Never pay any fee upfront to "release" a loan - a genuine processing fee is deducted from the disbursed amount, not collected separately in advance.
  • Read the Key Fact Statement fully before accepting any offer.

If you suspect fraud

Report it to the RBI's official channels, your bank/local cybercrime cell, and, if it involved a specific platform impersonating a legitimate service, notify that company directly so they can warn other users.

NeerCred is a multi-lender marketplace, not a lender — we match you with regulated partner banks and NBFCs, who make the actual lending decision. No fees are charged by NeerCred; any lender deduction or charge is disclosed by the lender in the Key Fact Statement (KFS) and loan agreement before you proceed.
