Managing a Credit Line Responsibly: Tips for Borrowers
NeerCred Team · 7/22/2026
A credit line's flexibility is genuinely valuable, but that same flexibility - no fixed repayment schedule forcing discipline the way an EMI does - means responsible management is entirely up to you.
Draw only what you actually need, when you need it
Because interest accrues on the drawn amount from the day you draw it, resist the temptation to draw more than immediately necessary "to have it on hand" - unused drawn funds still accrue interest, unlike the undrawn portion of your limit, which doesn't.
Repay drawn amounts as promptly as your cash flow allows
Since interest is typically calculated daily on the outstanding drawn balance, repaying sooner rather than later directly reduces your total interest cost - treat repayment with the same discipline you'd apply to a fixed loan EMI, even though the facility itself doesn't force a fixed schedule.
Avoid letting a credit line become a permanent, revolving crutch
Because a credit line replenishes as you repay, it's possible to keep a portion permanently drawn indefinitely without ever fully clearing it - this can quietly become an ongoing interest cost that never resolves, similar to only ever paying a credit card's minimum due. Periodically review whether you're making genuine progress toward zero balance, not just servicing interest indefinitely.
Understand any non-utilisation or commitment fees
If your specific facility charges a fee on the undrawn portion of your limit, factor this into your decision about how large a limit to request - a much larger limit than you'll realistically use could mean paying an ongoing fee for capacity you're not benefiting from.
Monitor your utilisation for credit score purposes
Similar to a credit card, how much of your credit line limit you're using relative to the total can factor into how credit bureaus and future lenders assess your credit behaviour - keeping utilisation reasonable, not just servicing interest on a large drawn balance indefinitely, supports a stronger overall credit profile.
