Personal Loan

What Is a Multi-Lender Marketplace and How Is It Different From a Direct Lender?

NeerCred Team · 12/29/2025

When you're looking for a personal loan, you generally have two structural options: apply directly to a single bank or NBFC, or use a multi-lender marketplace that checks your profile against several lenders at once. Understanding the difference helps you choose deliberately.

Applying directly to one lender

This means submitting your application, documents, and undergoing credit checks with a single institution. If they reject you or the terms aren't competitive, you'd need to start the entire process again with a different lender - including a fresh hard credit inquiry each time.

Using a multi-lender marketplace

A marketplace collects your details once, checks them against the eligibility criteria of multiple partner lenders, and surfaces the offers you're actually likely to qualify for - without you needing to separately apply, and generate a separate hard inquiry, at each institution one by one.

The genuine advantage of comparing multiple offers

Since eligibility and pricing vary meaningfully between lenders (see our guide on what determines your interest rate), checking against several at once increases the odds of finding a genuinely competitive offer for your specific profile, rather than accepting whatever a single lender happens to offer.

What doesn't change either way

Regardless of which route you take, the actual lending decision, disbursal, and ongoing loan relationship are always with the bank or NBFC you're ultimately matched with and accept an offer from - a marketplace facilitates the comparison and application, but never itself lends the money or makes the credit decision.

What to check about a marketplace before using one

A legitimate marketplace should never charge you a fee to compare offers or apply, should be transparent that partner lenders make the actual decisions, and should only work with genuinely regulated, licensed lending institutions - never present an unlicensed lender as an option.

NeerCred is a multi-lender marketplace, not a lender — we match you with regulated partner banks and NBFCs, who make the actual lending decision. No fees are charged by NeerCred; any lender deduction or charge is disclosed by the lender in the Key Fact Statement (KFS) and loan agreement before you proceed. See how it works and our compliance & disclosures for full details.
