Personal Loan
Personal Loan for Travel: Is It a Good Idea?
NeerCred Team · 10/4/2025
Using a personal loan to fund travel - a long-planned trip, a family vacation, or travel tied to a specific life event - is common, but it's worth thinking through more carefully than an emergency or essential expense, since travel is discretionary spending.
When it can make sense
If the trip is genuinely important to you (a milestone celebration, time with family abroad, an opportunity that won't repeat), and you can comfortably afford the resulting EMI without straining your monthly budget, a personal loan can spread the cost predictably rather than requiring the full amount upfront.
The trade-off to be honest about
Unlike a home or education loan, travel doesn't build any asset or future earning capacity - you're paying interest on an experience that's already over by the time you're still repaying it. This doesn't make it a bad choice, but it's worth being clear-eyed that the total cost of the trip includes the interest, not just the ticket and hotel prices.
A more disciplined approach
Some people prefer to borrow only part of the trip cost - covering essentials like flights via savings and financing discretionary add-ons - or to use a shorter tenure specifically so the debt doesn't linger long after the trip is a memory.
Before you commit
Run the actual numbers: use an EMI calculator with the real loan amount, rate, and tenure you'd be offered, and compare the total repayment (principal + interest) against what the trip is actually worth to you. If the EMI would meaningfully strain your monthly budget, it's worth considering a smaller trip, a longer savings runway, or a shorter loan tenure instead.
