Personal Loan Repayment Options: Auto-Debit, NACH, and More

Setting up how your EMI actually gets paid each month is one of the more mundane but important parts of taking a personal loan - getting it wrong is one of the most common, avoidable causes of a missed payment.

NACH (National Automated Clearing House)

NACH is the standard electronic mandate system used across Indian banking for recurring payments like EMIs. When you set up NACH for your loan, you authorise your bank to automatically debit the EMI amount from your account on a fixed date each month, directly to the lender.

Why auto-debit (via NACH or similar) is generally the safer default

Manual payment - remembering to transfer the EMI amount yourself each month - introduces avoidable risk: a busy month, a forgotten date, or a simple oversight can result in a missed payment, with all the consequences that follow (late fees, credit score impact). Auto-debit removes that dependency on remembering.

What to check when setting up auto-debit

  • Confirm the exact debit date and ensure your account has sufficient balance a day or two before it, not just on the date itself.
  • Understand what happens if a debit fails due to insufficient funds - many banks and lenders charge a separate penalty for a failed/bounced auto-debit, on top of any late payment charge from the lender.
  • Keep your registered bank account active and don't let NACH mandates lapse if you switch primary banks.

Alternatives to auto-debit

Some lenders also allow manual payment via net banking, UPI, or a payment link each month, for borrowers who prefer more direct control - though this shifts the responsibility of remembering the due date entirely onto you.

A practical recommendation

Unless you have a specific reason not to, setting up auto-debit against an account you reliably keep funded is the simplest way to remove "forgetting to pay" from your list of financial risks entirely.
