Personal Loan

Personal Loan for Salaried vs. Self-Employed: What’s Different?

NeerCred Team · 9/5/2025

A personal loan is available to both salaried employees and self-employed individuals, but lenders evaluate the two groups quite differently because their income is verified in different ways.

Salaried applicants

For salaried applicants, income is straightforward to verify through salary slips, Form 16, and bank statements showing regular salary credits. Lenders typically look at your take-home salary, employer reputation and stability, and length of service with your current employer.

Self-employed applicants

Self-employed applicants - including business owners, professionals, and freelancers - don't have a fixed monthly payslip, so lenders assess income differently, usually through income tax returns, business bank statements, and sometimes GST registration and a business current account. Business vintage (how long the business has been operating) and profit consistency often matter more than a single year's income figure.

Why this distinction matters in the application

Because the underlying assessment is different, a well-designed loan application will ask self-employed applicants separate questions - about GST registration and current account details, for instance - that don't apply to salaried applicants at all. This isn't extra friction for its own sake; it reflects how lenders genuinely evaluate the two profiles.

Which group finds it easier to get approved?

Neither group is inherently favoured - a salaried applicant with an unstable job history can be a weaker case than a self-employed applicant with several years of consistent, well-documented income. What matters most in both cases is demonstrable income stability and a clean repayment history.

Practical tip

Self-employed applicants should keep their business financial documentation - ITRs, GST filings, bank statements - organised and up to date, since incomplete documentation is one of the most common reasons this group's applications take longer or get rejected.
