Travel Credit Cards: What to Look For
NeerCred Team · 6/23/2026
Travel credit cards are marketed heavily around lounge access and reward miles, but evaluating their genuine value requires looking past the headline benefits to how they actually apply to your travel pattern.
Airport lounge access
Many travel cards offer complimentary domestic and/or international lounge access, but often with conditions - a limited number of visits per quarter or year, sometimes requiring a minimum spend in the preceding period to qualify, and sometimes only for the primary cardholder, not guests, unless specified. Check these conditions against your actual travel frequency before valuing this benefit highly.
Reward miles and airline/hotel partnerships
Some travel cards earn miles that can be transferred to specific airline or hotel loyalty programs, often at a defined conversion ratio, which can meaningfully increase the effective value of your spending if you already have loyalty accounts with those specific partners - but the value drops significantly if you don't fly those airlines or stay at those hotel chains.
Foreign transaction (forex) fees
If you travel internationally, the card's foreign transaction fee (charged on purchases made in foreign currency) genuinely matters - some travel-focused cards offer reduced or waived forex fees specifically because international spending is their target use case, which can be a meaningful saving compared to a standard domestic card's forex markup.
Travel insurance and other embedded benefits
Some travel cards include complimentary travel insurance (delayed baggage, trip cancellation, and similar coverage) - it's worth checking the actual coverage limits and conditions rather than assuming this fully replaces the need for standalone travel insurance for significant trips.
How to evaluate a travel card for your specific pattern
Map the card's specific benefits (lounge visit count, mile conversion partners, forex fee rate) against your actual travel frequency and typical destinations/airlines, rather than being drawn in by an impressive-sounding headline benefit that may not apply well to how you actually travel.
