What Happens If You Miss a Credit Card Payment?

NeerCred Team · 6/16/2026

Missing a credit card payment has cascading consequences, some immediate and some longer-lasting - understanding them helps you prioritise avoiding it and know what to do if it happens.

Immediate consequences

Most issuers charge a late payment fee if you miss the due date, and if you don't pay the minimum due at all, you also lose the grace period on new purchases and begin accruing interest on your full outstanding balance from the transaction date, not just the missed amount.

Credit score impact

A missed credit card payment is reported to credit bureaus and can meaningfully lower your CIBIL score, similar to a missed loan EMI - this affects your ability to get approved for future credit (cards, loans) and the terms you're offered.

The minimum due trap

Paying only the minimum due each month avoids being reported as a missed payment, but it doesn't avoid interest - you'll be charged interest on the remaining unpaid balance, and since credit card interest rates are typically high, carrying a balance this way over multiple months can become very expensive, even though technically no payment was "missed."

What to do if you think you'll miss a payment

Contact your card issuer proactively before the due date if possible - some issuers offer short grace accommodations or can discuss options, which is generally easier to arrange before a payment is missed than after it's already reported as delinquent.

Preventing missed payments going forward

Setting up auto-debit for at least the minimum due (ideally the full statement amount, to also avoid interest) directly from your bank account removes the risk of a simple oversight causing a missed payment - a low-effort safeguard worth setting up on any card you use regularly.

The bigger-picture risk

Repeated missed payments over time can escalate to more serious consequences - continued credit score damage, collections activity, and in serious, prolonged cases, legal recovery action, similar to a defaulted loan - so a single missed payment is worth addressing immediately rather than letting the pattern continue.
