Credit Line
What Is a Credit Line and How Does It Differ From a Loan?
NeerCred Team · 7/4/2026
A credit line (also called a line of credit) is a flexible borrowing facility that gives you access to funds up to an approved limit, which you can draw on as needed - fundamentally different in structure from a traditional loan.
How a credit line differs from a loan
A traditional loan disburses a fixed lump sum upfront, with interest accruing on the full amount from day one, repaid through fixed EMIs. A credit line instead gives you an approved limit you can draw from (fully or partially) whenever you need funds, and - critically - interest is charged only on the amount you've actually drawn and are currently using, not on your full approved limit.
Why this "revolving" structure matters
Because you're not paying interest on funds you haven't drawn, a credit line can be considerably more cost-efficient than a lump-sum loan for needs that are irregular, uncertain in exact amount, or spread out over time - you access funds as the need arises, rather than borrowing the full anticipated amount upfront and paying interest on all of it immediately.
Common forms a credit line takes in India
Credit lines commonly appear as overdraft facilities, "flexi" personal loans, working capital limits for businesses, or an overdraft secured against a fixed deposit or property - the underlying revolving-credit, interest-on-utilized-amount principle is the same across these variations, even though the specific product names differ.
Repayment structure
Repayment on a credit line is typically more flexible than a fixed EMI loan - you might repay the drawn amount on your own schedule (subject to a minimum payment and any facility-specific terms), and once repaid, that portion of your limit becomes available to draw again, similar in spirit to how a credit card's limit replenishes as you pay it down.
When a credit line is the better fit compared to a loan
For needs that are genuinely uncertain in timing or amount - occasional cash flow gaps, an emergency reserve, irregular business expenses - a credit line's flexibility and interest-only-on-utilized-amount structure is usually a better fit than committing to a full lump-sum loan you might not need in its entirety.
